Do I Need Waterproof LED Strip Lights?
Posted by Amit Soni on 23rd Jan 2025
If you’re planning to use LED strip lights in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or outdoors, the short answer is yes, you’ll likely need waterproof versions. However, for most indoor spaces without exposure to moisture, waterproofing isn’t essential.
What Are Waterproof LED Strip Lights?
Waterproof LED strip lights are coated with an IP-rated layer of protective material. This coating prevents moisture from reaching the internal components and causing damage, such as short circuits.
The level of protection an IP coating provides varies, and it’s rated on a scale. For LED strips, the most commonly used waterproofing standard is IP65, which involves a silicone gel coating.
How Waterproof Are IP65 LED Strip Lights?
IP65-rated strips are splash-proof and can handle light exposure to water, such as splashes, jets, and condensation. This makes them ideal for:
- Kitchens, where water splashes are common
- Bathrooms, where condensation and plumbing pose risks
- Window frames, where condensation can accumulate
However, IP65 strips are not designed for full submersion. Water can still seep in if submerged, so they aren’t suitable for ponds, pools, or other underwater applications.
Other Waterproof Ratings
For more protection, you might consider IP67-rated strips, which feature a hollow plastic sleeve for enhanced waterproofing. However, IP67 strips have a significant limitation: they cannot be cut without exposing the components, which compromises their protection.
In contrast, IP65 strips retain their waterproofing even after being cut, making them more versatile for custom installations.
Don’t Forget Peripheral Components
It’s easy to overlook the other components of your setup, like power supplies, controllers, and amplifiers. Most standard versions of these are not waterproof, so if they’ll be exposed to moisture, look for IP-rated versions to ensure safety and longevity. Even waterproof peripherals should never be submerged.
Benefits Beyond Waterproofing
Even if you don’t strictly need waterproofing, it’s worth noting that IP-rated coatings also provide protection against physical damage. This is especially helpful in areas where the strips might be exposed to accidental contact, like under kitchen cabinets or along stair edges.
Safety First
When dealing with electricity and water, safety is critical. Always consult a qualified electrician for installations in moisture-prone areas. While LED strip lights use low-voltage direct current, water exposure can still damage components or pose a hazard.
