FAQ: Cutting LED Strip Lights
Posted by Navdip Gahir on 23rd Jan 2025
LED strip lights are easily one of the most flexible and adaptable forms of lighting, and that’s not just because they’re bendy. One of their standout features is the ability to cut them to size, ensuring they perfectly fit any installation, whether it’s big or small.
Customising the length of LED strip lights couldn’t be simpler, making them a great option for a wide variety of applications.
Cutting LED Strip Lights Is Simple
You might think cutting an electrical product like an LED strip light is tricky or even dangerous. But here’s the truth:
“If you can cut a piece of paper, you can cut an LED strip light.”
That’s right—it’s as straightforward as using a pair of household scissors. Just ensure you cut at one of the marked points along the strip. These cutting points are spaced at intervals of 2.5 cm, 5 cm, or 10 cm, depending on the type of strip light you have.
Understanding Cutting Points
LED strip lights are designed with specific cutting points. These are indicated by a straight line with silver solder pads on either side. Always cut at these points; cutting anywhere else can damage the strip’s components and prevent it from working properly.
Thanks to their clever design, LED strips will still function after being cut. The circuit is self-contained at each cutting point, so they remain fully operational.
If you’re trimming the strip from the end, make sure you’re cutting the section without the connector. Otherwise, you might end up with a long strip that you can’t connect to your power supply.
Connecting LED Strip Lights
If you need to join two pieces of LED strip lights together, you’ll have two options: soldering or using solderless connectors.
Solderless connectors are the easiest and most convenient method. Simply insert the ends of the two strips into the connector, ensuring the solder pads align with the metal contacts, and clip them into place.
